There are certain things that you should always have in your car. They are essential in many different situations you might run into, from an accident, flat tire, to simply getting your car stuck. We’ve compiled a list of things that are crucial to have around when you are on the road.
1. Multi-device charger
Having a multi-device charger is handy for juicing up your iPhone, camera, or other electronic devices. It’s really important having a charged phone in case of emergency, so you can call for help. Having a charger with two USB ports is ideal.
2. Car jump starter
There is nothing worse than trying to start your car in the middle of nowhere on a cold day, only to find out your car’s battery is dead. Instead of trying to find some with jumper cables, it’s much better to have a portable car jump starter. It enables you to jump-start your car without needing jumper cables and a second car.
3. Tire traction mats
Another situation that sucks as bad as the previous one is getting stuck in the snow somewhere in the mountains, especially if you are alone. This is where tire traction mats come to the rescue. These mats feature spikes that grip both the snow and your tires to provide traction. Simply put in front of your tires and driver over them.
4. Gas container
Many of us have experienced running out of gas on the highway. Having a no-spill gas container on hand will provide you with enough gas to drive to the nearest gas station. That way you don’t have to call your friends and wait for them to bring you some fuel.
5. Windshield wiper fluid
Between pollen in the warmer months and salt in the colder months, plus the daily grime and dust, most of us go through lots of windshield wiper fluid. So keep an extra gallon in your trunk to avoid running out on a long trip.
6. Blind spot mirrors
Whether you’re driving through a school zone or a busy highway, we always need to check our blind spots. Luckily you can buy small, inexpensive mirrors to make this easier. They are self-adhesive and take seconds to install.
7. Spare tire
Not so long ago, spare tires were a standard feature in all cars. Now, around one-third of car manufacturers don’t include spare tires in new cars. So it’s a good idea to make sure your car has it and one that’s the proper size for your car.
8. Fire extinguisher
A fire extinguisher is something you will hopefully never have to use, but it’s smart to have one nearby in case of a fire. It’s best to get one that can work against both flames started by flammable liquids like oil and gasoline and for electrical fires.
9. GPS Locator
If you live in an area where car theft is common or drive a car that’s commonly stolen, having a hidden GPS locator installed in your car is a smart move. For example, Nissan Altima is the most stolen 2017 model year car. So if you are driving a Nissan lease special, it might be a good idea to get one of these.
10. First aid kit
It’s always good to have a first aid kit around when you are on a road trip. They are lightweight, don’t take up much space, and come with plenty of band-aids. There are also additional tools like tweezers and scissors.
